ATLAS, Universiteit Twente

Werk in oplage voor de Engelstalige bacheloropleiding Technology and Liberal Arts & Sciences.

"Before we start the commencement ceremony, I would like to explain the intriguing artwork here on stage. This art has been commissioned by the Core Team of ATLAS teachers; it is inspired by the Class of 2017 and created by a local artist, Lex Chen, who, just last week graduated from the ArtEZ Academy of Art and Design in Enschede. Typically we think of photographers as capturing an image, but in Lex ’ work that is only the start. It is followed by manipulating the chemical processes to complete the image. In this specific project he, for some parts, even forwent the traditional camera altogether. The objects were placed directly on top of the photographic paper and the combination of moisture from the plants, the sunlight, and the chemicals provided the images. In the large piece these images are attached such that they allow one to scrummage through the plants on the forest floor.

Although all the images represent plants they are all unique. In some way they are like our graduates. Even though all of our graduates are new engineers and in some ways similar, they are in many more ways very different, and all unique.

The large artwork, which will find it’s home in the Citadel alongside the previous year’s art. The smaller pieces of art, we hope, will find their way into your homes, each unique, but each connected to the main body of work. Like each of you, and ATLAS.''
